Wet Exhaust

Bill and Joan own WILLPOWER, a 1977 model P35 on Lake St. Clare MI.

Bill has taken the wet exhaust issue seriously.

When my boat was fifteen years old, exhaust fumes were coming into the engine compartment.  I found a break in the exhaust pipe that was hidden with asbestos wrappings.  Here are the steps I used to replace the wet exhaust:

1. Remove the pipes from the exhaust manifold to the muffler.

2.  Take the asbestos off and replace the nipples and elbows with stainless steel pipes.

3.  Check the alignment on the manifold.

4.  Fabricate a water jacket around the pipe assembly using 3" diameter stainless steel tubing with 1/8" wall.

Water enters the engine manifold through a rubber tube with a check valve.   Next a rubber tube to a 1/2" diameter stainless steel tube welded in the water jacket.  The water cools the pipe where the hot exhaust is entering.  The water follows the pipe to the end of the water jacket just before the muffler.  Water and exhaust is allowed out through six 3/16"holes in the exhaust pipe .  This makes an extension of the exhaust manifold.  (Engine is an Atomic 4)

Bill also included a picture of his built in waist bucket.

Thanks Bill
