Painting The Hull

Nov - Dec 2008

This is one process of painting the hull of P35 using rollers and brushes using a one part Interlux©

Brightside Paint.

The hull was painted during the same time period as the Deck and the Teak.  Location is Melbourne Florida, outside

temperature during prep and painting averaged 72°, with always a light breeze and low humidity.  It rained two days

after completing the hull. I had complete freedom at the yard to work and accomplish anything I needed to do.

Much better results could have been obtained by a paint sprayer.

1st step after haul out is a good hull wash and degreasing

(I used "Purple Wash" & green scrub pads.  Wash and degrease to remove all old wax and mold

that was waxed in.  Last update 10 Dec 2008)

Vinyl Letters were removed using a plastic razor blade

After

2st step - Dings filled, Hull sanding using 120-grit sandpaper and a Wash Down

Sanding took almost 4 hours

Used a small tube of Bondo© to patch up a few Hurricane dock gouges.  I didn't need that much just some touch-up areas.  It sanded down nicely

Hull sanding with an orbital and 120-grit sandpaper.  It took almost four hours to sand the hull and 8 sanding paper disks.

Final sanding of the hull.  Took a lot longer than I thought

Final wash down done. Now ready for the 333 wipe down

Marking the Top and Bootstripe location

Instead of measuring the top line so I could replace it, I decided to tape over it and edge tape the bottom

I didn't need to try this method of holding the orbital sander but it might have prevented my sore shoulder.  Cool idea.

3rd step - Hull wipe down with Interlux© 333 to remove sanding dust and wax/mold

Wiping down the hull took about 30 min

"1 qt of cleaner should wipe down about 10' of boat." - DYI

"To check that all the wax is removed, lightly spray with water.  If the water beads, degrease again." - Don Casey

The hull was wiped down with 333.  It took about 1 hour to do the hull and to wipe down the deck teak.  This cleaned up all the sanding dust that that the wash didn't take care of.

4th step - Appling the Interlux© Pre-Kote©

It took about 1 hour to apply the Pre-Kote©

What type of Painting Tape

(Chart complements DIY Magazine)

The pre-Kote went on well.  Just covered the hull with 1 qt.  Not a great looking paint job but a good undercoat.

I forgot to do the front stay attachment with tape.  A lot things to tape on this boat.

I was going to open my second qt of Pre-Kote and do the deck-hull trim but the guy at the yard that paints boats said it won't make much of a difference and you can same that $30.  Yea...

6th step - Sanding, Wipe Down of Pre-Kote and re-taping

Sanding took 40 min.  Tapping took 20 min

I choose to pull off the pre-coat taping and re-tape after the sanding.  A lot things to tape on this boat.  Don't use that Dollar Store tape.  Go buy the 3M good stuff.  I did try the Dollar Store tape and the blue color of the tape bled off on the hull.  Not good to start off with!

7th step - First coat of Interlux Dark Blue Brightside

First coat took 1 qt completely and 1-1/2 hours.  Temperature was 73° and 10% chance of rain.

The details

Roll and Tipping going on

Covered very nice for a first coat

I started with the stern area to learn how to do that roll and tip stuff

First coat reflection.  Not bad

Clean up.  I had just enough paint left in the can(s) to do some touch up after all the coats are done and fully dry.

8th step - Sanding, Wipe down of First coat - Painting Second Coat

Second coat took also 1 qt.  Sanding took 1 hr.  Painting took 1-1/2 hours for two.

I started sanding with 440-grit paper and soon found it was not strong enough

I changed to 220-grit and found it cut the  runs better on the trim.

The sanding block is a must in order to get an even service

I finished up the sanding and wiped down the hull with a light coat of 333

Getting ready for the second coat.  I cut the paint with 1/2 ounce of 333.

I got by dad in the tipping act

Much better than the first coat.

That reflection is getting better

Love that new look

I think another coat will do the trick

10th step - Sanding and Wipe down of Second coat - Painting Third coat

Third hull coat took 1 qt with some left over.  1-1/2 hours painting, temp 72°, 10% chance of rain

I tried to touch up a bad spot and it didn't work.  You just have to wait till the coat is dry

I also needed to sand out a drip area.  the top hull joint was notorious for drips.

The one and only bristle from the tipping brush. Yea, for a good brush here.

A place on the stern needed to be redone

I sanded the hull in places with 320-grit paper.  I didn't get carried away here just in places

One more wipe down with 333

After using the tipping brush I cleaned it, wrapped it in a rag and stuffed it in a plastic glove until the next day

Based on the above, I decided to do a third coat

So instead of vertical rolling and horizontal brushing (tipping) I changed it around to get ride of the vertical lines that were staring to show.  Turned out to be a good idea of my dads.

After two hours of drying, I removed the boot tape.  This green car painting tape was into day 3 of it's 14 day life

The blue marine 3M tape worked better and didn't leave any glue scum.

Some places on the top teak toe rail will need to be re-sanded.  If that's all I have to worry about from the blue paint, I'm happy.

So, after 3 hours drying for the third coat, it's starting to look much better than the second coat.  That's it for the Dark Blue.

11th step - Painting the Bootstrip and Top Strip

I re-taped the bottom strip in order to get a head start on making some progress with the Bristol beige.

A quick wipe down of the bottom strip area with 333

The first coat of Bristol Beige.  I did not not tape the top line yet.  The hull needed to dry at least 12 hours (at 72°) and I didn't want to put any tape on it yet.

I didn't like the look of beige strop on the hulll so I changed to OFF WHITE.

So with the hull drying for three days I felt it safe to tape the top strip

After 2 hours I had the top and bottom strips done for the first coat.  Light coat is better or those drips will be back.

I lightly sanded with 220-grit, wiped down with 333 and put on a second coat and pulled that tape off.

Hull is Finished !!

Lessons Learned

1- I painted from 9-3 each day, due to humidity in East-Central coast of Florida

2- I pulled new paint into old paint on the hull, left to right

3- Roll and Tip worked better with two

4- Roll a 2' vertical strip and tip horizontally with the brush then switch the direction for the last coat

5- Keep the tipping brush cleaned with 333

6- For my painting effort, 1 qt of Pre-Kote covered the hull as well as 1qt per coat for the Dark Blue.  This held true for the second and third coats also.

7- My paint runs were because I had too much paint on the roller and didn't tip it out soon enough.  Could have thinned it more also.

8- I could only paint one coat-a-day-drying time at 75°

9- I put on two coats of OFF WHITE for both the top and bottom strip.

10- I sanded by the numbers, (Hull)120-grit, (Pre-Kote)220-grit, (DARK BLUE)320-grit

11- I used 1/3 gal of 333 for wiping down the hull, 1-qt Pre-Kote, 3-qts of DARK BLUE (three coats), a new brush each time, same good quality tipping brush, a bundle of rags and 3 rolls of good tape.

12- From washing the hull to pulling the tape off the strips it took two weeks for one person.
