Lewmar produced the two cockpit 42ST winches in the late 1970s. |

The first picture above shows how the
chrome on the
drum was beginning to flake off in sharp pieces.
I wanted to re-chrome, lubricate
and reinstall these winches with
a proper backing
plate. I had major
problems in getting the three SS
Allen head screws
out of the winch top plate. Nigel Calder in his excellent book,

I cleaned up the gears with turpentine and lubricated them with white marine
grease. The gear pawls and springs were lightly oiled with sewing
machine oil. I had
FAR-MAC PLATING in Melbourne Florida
do the chroming.
It took them about four weeks and they did and excellent job . I made the backing plate out of 1/8” aluminum and drilled oversize mounting holes. I used a liberal coat of Marine Silicon to seal the bottom of the winch to the teak. Pictures below show a finished drum and completely reassembled winch on the port side of Mikhaya. |
