Lazy Jacks

Mikhaya had a Lazy Jack system already installed with I bought the boat.  It did not cover the complete boom (16' in all) and allowed the main sail to drop off the boom into the cockpit.  It also did not retract while sailing.

The Requirements...

1. All of the main sail should fall and cradle on the boom

2. It should be retractable when not in use

3. The boom lines can be stowed under the sail cover

4. Minimum holes drilled in the boom and mast

5. Low cost

Sounds like I'm trying to sell something!

The Research...

  • Dick Cusick sent his design developed on Irish Blessing.

  • My son Matt's hand drawn design (presently on the USF Sailing Team).

  • HARKEN© design for a 35' boat.

  • Design from Bob Kiernam's SketchBook found on the Net.

  • "My Lazy Jack Set Up,"

  • Email from Joe Fleming, on his Lazy Jack design for Windstar, a P35.  windstrr@cs.com

The Design...

Details and Pictures...

Mast Layout

Top Block
70% up the mast
(~27' above the deck)

About 70% of the mast height and above the spreaders seemed like a logical place to attach the two top block on both sides of the mast.

Boom Layout

Eyes placed under the boom at:
25%  4'-0"
60%  9'-0"
85%  13'-6"

I wanted the main sail to drop on top of the boom and cradle completely with falling out.  The eyes below the boom seemed to fall in the logical locations of 25%, 60% and 85% of the boom as measured from the rear of the mast.

I hand tied it all together and adjusted the line lengths.  I later finished off the line ends.

As I was working the Lazy Jack lines I checked out the possible interference with the Main Sail Reefing Lines.

So after about a dozen times of raising and dropping the main sail, I got all the lengths right.

When I retract the lines I hook them around the reefing hooks and secure the ends on the two nylon cleats.
