Engine Removal

The process of removing a 485 lb marine engine from a
P35 can be done efficiently.

Engine Compartment

I removed the cabinet doors and framing. You will need to support the middle with a board if you plan to put any weight on the cabinet top.

Clear the Way

Although this pictures does not show it, I pulled everyting out of the salon and covered all the woodwork with sheets. I put plywood down on the sole to protect the finish.

Disconnect Electrical Connections

Disconnect battery (+), grounds and control wiring. Don't forget to lable every wire.

Disconnect Fuel Tank

Drain the fuel tank and disconnect. I decided to pull it and give it a good cleaning and redo some fittings. It came out the starboard locker.

Disconnect Wet Exhaust

Had to cut this exhaust pipe out due to the rust. Get rid of that asbestios.

Unbolt the Shaft

Standing on my head and 20 minutes later, I had the four bolts out.

Unbold the Engine Mounts

Major effort at getting at the underside of the engine mount bolts. Had to adapt some wrenches and sockets to get to the mounting.

Walking the Plank

The use of "two-by-fours" helped to leverage the engine out. Major effort to get the oil filter and fuel pump around the center-board tube on the left. It didn't just walk straight out!

The Engine Hole

Now there is room to work down there.

Up and Out

The yard lifted the engine out of the boat and onto the truck. My son Matt making sure it all gets there.

1978 Westerbeke

Now you can get to all those tight spots you could only see with a mirrow before!

Rental Lift at the House

I rented one of these lifts coming and going. Made a big difference working on the engine.
