Cockpit Lockers

This project was offered on the P40 Web Site as a

method of sealing up the cockpit lockers.  The P40 and the P35 have

the same designed cockpit lockers

Waterproofing Cockpit Lockers on Mach II

Before I sailed Mach II to Hawaii I made some removable bypass tubes that sealed the lockers and allowed the seats to drain off.  I didn't want to close off the ventilation with the engine running in  hot tropical weather.

The conforming tubes are made of 1" (150 psi) rubber hose with a closed cell polyethylene foam plug glued to the end with Life Seal.  One length is for the back of the locker and another for the front.  The foam can be trimmed to the shape of the drains with a sharp carving knife.  With the rest of the locker sealed (taped up), you just insert the tubes and your ready to roll!!  Well, hopefully not.

Cockpit locker modification on Endeavour

The modification of the lockers involves the installation of 1" teak that is bolted and 5200'ed to the locker opening.  The top edge of the teak almost touches the underside of the locker lid; the closed cell foam on the underside of the lid makes contact with the teak and seems to make a good seal.  The modification works well.

The only drawback is that the teak insert creates a smaller access opening to the locker.  I suspect that it would be possible to make the inboard lip of the insert removable/stowable.  When making a passage it could be installed with fasteners.
