What a wonderful web site you have created. Thank
you. Looking through it gets my juices flowing and motivates me to get to
work on the boat, which I must admit is a bit neglected anymore.
The boat is pretty much the same as original, with a relatively few
upgrades and replacements --new cushions, curtains, cockpit cushions,
upgrades to the old Atomic 4 (e.g., electronic ignition, electric fuel
pump with which it still runs fine), new cabin sole, porta potti in place
of marine head, additional refer insulation and 12 volt refrigeration,
epoxy bottom job, replaced support at bottom of interior mast pole (done
in a very similar way to what is described on the web site, except I
didn't bend the bottom plate), auto pilot, dodger.... This has been
sufficient to make it a very comfortable day sailor and coastal cruiser.
We have been in squalls with waves in excess of 10 feet on the Pamlico and
the boat handles them fine -- better than the crew. We've raced in winds
with gust to 50 mph and have a couple of first in class trophies.
I was interested to see one owner had sailed his boat to Bermuda. I have
always felt the boat is very solid. However, I have felt it is primarily a
coastal rather than a northern ocean cruiser. I can personally say that my
boat has been through a number of hurricanes on a mooring and has always
come through with no evidence of wear or tear. It feels as solid as ever.
